- INTRODUCTION
Reading is a magical adventure that can take us to far-off lands, introduce us to fascinating characters, and spark our imaginations.
For kids, developing a reading habit is not only fun but also helps to improve vocabulary, comprehension, and critical thinking skills. So if you’re a parent, guardian, or teacher looking to inspire young readers, Here are 10 ways (Part 1) to make reading fun and exciting for kids.
1. CREATE A COZY READING NOOK:
Set up a special reading corner with comfortable cushions, soft blankets, and shelves filled with books. Make it a cozy and inviting space that kids can escape to whenever they want to explore new worlds through reading.
2. READ ALOUD TOGETHER
Reading aloud is a great way to engage kids in storytelling. Choose books with expressive characters and use different voices to bring the story to life. Encourage children to join in and read along, making it a shared experience.
3. MAKE READING A DAILY HABIT.
Set aside a specific time each day dedicated to reading. It could be before bedtime, during lunch breaks, or after school. Consistency helps kids develop a routine and makes reading a regular part of their lives. (With the help of a reading log book)
4. LET THEM CHOOSE
Allow children to pick books that interest them. Visit libraries, and bookstores, or explore online platforms to discover a wide range of genres and topics. Giving kids the freedom to choose what they want to read increases their excitement and personal connection to the story.
5. ORGANISE BOOK CLUBS OR READING CIRCLES.
Encourage kids to form book clubs or reading circles with their friends. They can discuss their favorite books, exchange recommendations, or even act out scenes from their beloved stories. This social aspect helps foster a sense of community and shared enthusiasm for reading.
Continuation on ways to Encourage reading habits to make it fun and exciting for kids will be concluded as part two (2) of our next post.
